Speaking the Truth!!

This is a video of Rhianna's interview discussing what happened with her boyfriend at the time Chris Brown. She explains to the viewers how they had become best friends and fell in love quickly. She explains how the deeper they fell in love the more dangerous the relationship became. When she discussed how the argument started with the fact that Chris was keeping something from her and not being honest she would not let it go. What does these show viewers? Does it show young women that they should pursue and push a boyfriend until they are told the truth or that they should leave it alone because they may be battered? I think that it is great that she spoke up and had this interview but I also think that it could be a mixed message to young viewers. What do you think about this interview and how Rhianna explains the story? Do you think that the media portays this behavior and discussion as acceptable? Forgive and Forget?

I don't know...I don't remember!!!

This story is unbelievable and the fact that Chris Brown and his mother are going on television that airs to the public and acting as if his behavior of beating Rhianna is okay because he doesn't remember. In my opinion this is a terrible example by the media to show young men that community service is a "fair" punishment to be give after you assault, batter, bruise and destroy a woman. I really am disturbed by the fact that he is or maybe "was" considered an icon and a male that young viewers look up to. What are we showing the children in society, is that all you have to say is that "you don't remember doing it"? Don't you think that taking responsibility for your actions is what the media should be teaching viewers? He stated that he plead guilty so that he would not have to go to jail, not because he was wrong and made a mistake. What do you think about his interview? Do you think that it is "fair" to be sentenced to community service after you have seen the photos of what he did to Rhiannas face?

Homosexuality in the Media

I have found a photo from the cover of a People magazine that shows Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia on their wedding day. The photo shows Portia in a beautiful wedding dress and Ellen shown wearing a beautiful white suit. My assumption is that Ellen represents the more masculine side of the relationship and Portia represents the more feminine side? I am not quite sure if that is what this means. I personally do not know if I agree or disagree with homosexuality. I believe that if people are happy they should continue the journey towards happiness. I personally was raised with the belief that women should be with men and men with women. Over the decades this has changed and homosexuality. Even with these beliefs I also believe that a person has a choice and should have a partner that makes them happy and fulfills their life. Jerry seems to think that this behavior is funny and laughs, makes fun of and giggles as he steps into the audience. Do you think that it is funny that he finds other peoples issues comical? Do you think that this representation has a negative or positive effect on young viewers or that maybe parents who are against bi-sexuality or homosexuality may be disturbed by this representation?

What do you think about the Jerry Springer show? I have come to see this show as "trash TV". The topics and fighting is very disturbing to me as a viewer. It seems to me that the topics and characters chosen are out of the ordinary. The show has many viewers that really enjoy the chaos and arguments. I have never seen a positive topic or a happy couple or storyline. All of the stories are cheaters and lower class Americans without the class of the average American. I understand that entertainment must have a selling point but I think that it can be somewhat insulting to the class that they represent. The morals that they show are pretty much invisible or unknown. This shows me that we will sell anything that is false or degrading of another genre. The show represents the idea that cheating is okay and gives us the right to fight, argue or disrespect the other person. I have learned from my childhood that cheating is wrong and that people should not be unfaithful. I also believe that the person who cheats is the one to blame, not the person that they have cheated with. Here is a clip from Jerry's show. Lifetime or Lifeslime?

This article I posted below discusses lifetime television network. The article is very helpful in discussing a different way to help women feel connected through the network. They discuss the choices of movie topics that relate to women's everyday life. Lifetime tries to create a unique variety of topics for movies, while helping to influence family and friends. In my opinion I believe that this network tries to have a place that the women in the world can go to and belong. I think that one of the positive points about this network may be that it is a safe place where women can relate to characters and plots. Another positive and useful attribute this channel has added is the website and link that follows. This site provides solutions and helpful hints to women who live an everyday life. The site is included in the article and if you click on it you will be guided to the main site. What do you think about this network for women? Do you think that it is a positive or negative network? Women in Advertisements

The topic that I want to discuss is in regard to the images of women in the media. Why are women usually shown as victims, items or seductive females? Women are not shown in the same ways that men are shown. They do not always appear smart, real or capable. I have gotten some photos for you to look at that show a vast difference in the portrayals of women in advertisements. What do you think about the advertisements? I think that most of them show a weak, submissive woman and with a lack of intelligence. The model shown on the runway with a close up has ribs protruding through her skin. Are we supposed to think that is sexy? She is a model and what would young girls think if they saw that representation? Would they think that attractive women are supposed to have bones sticking out of our bodies in order to be a super model? What message are we receiving from the media? The media shows so many portrayals that are very unrealistic. I have added a short video from Jean Kilbourne that discusses these images of women. How do you feel about the media representations and do you think they should be monitored more closely?

In the video Britney is pretty much nude and very seductive throughout the entire video. Do you think that this is normal? I know that this is what sells but I am just curious to know why the female in this video is dancing on tables and chairs in an office setting. Britney is dancing to entertain the men. All of the men are sitting in their chairs while they are being performed for. I just think that entertainment can sometimes cause degradation to a race, gender or class. There seems to always be a price paid for by one or the other. I understand that money is a necessity in this country, but sometimes I am not sure if the media represents anyone that has any respect for themselves. Am I the only one that thinks this way? I may just be old-fashioned but I try to be a little more modest and choose to keep myself respect.

Fear Driven Media

I chose this article because it is discussing what we are currently learning in class. The article discusses the GLBT viewing class on television. The article states the same things that we have discussed in our class. The representations of gay men are viewed as negative or stereotypical. The fact that the men are even gay is said to be close to invisible or even unknown. The article discusses an example of connotative reading that were displayed in "Starsky and Hutch" similar to what we discussed in "Cagney and Lacey". There was a study done with 6 viewers between the ages 20 and 25 and came from different social backgrounds. They were asked to view a drama called "The Two of Us" produced and geared toward pupils between ages 14 and 16. In the drama there was a concern for homosexuality and bisexuality. The drama involved a male character having feelings for a gay male friend, but also loved his girlfriend. The overall study showed in conclusion that none of the viewers found the homosexuality or bisexuality to be offensive or negative. I believe that gays and lesbians are a part of our society and that they should not be discriminated against. Who am I to judge others choice of lover or partner? I also think that it is important to show society the "real" representations of people. I believe that for any person, any reason or any product. If we do not show the realistic characters than what are we showing viewers? Reality appears to scare people. Are you frightened by the false representations shown on television? Once again I believe that this a money issue, producers are scared to show reality because they might lose money.Is it really as big of an issue as we make it? Kate plus 8?

This is Kate Gossiping from Jon and Kate plus 8. I decided to post a blog on this to discuss what others think about the effect that the media will have on the Gosselin children if any? There have been many interviews, articles, stories and photos all over the media showing Jon and Kate. I have seen, read and heard several. Some of the representations show Jon or Kate speaking disrespectful of each other. In the beginning of this whole ordeal of a separation, there were photos of Jon and another young woman everywhere. In my opinion that portrays a sneaky father that hides with women other than their mommy. The response the media had used to those photos was followed with accusations that Kate had cheated on Jon first. I just think that it is ashame that a show built to represent a large family's daily living and events have to become a "media misfortune" to the public. The children will see these representations of their mother and father, if not yet than sometime in the future. The mother and father are shown blaming each other for the breakup of the relationship. Do these adults know how to take responsibility for their own actions? It does not seem like that to me. Privacy is completely removed from a person once they accept the life of a celebrity, but I think that people disregard what affect it has on others (especially children). The Gosselin children could someday be made fun of by peers in school, sports or other activities. Do you think that any of these things could have a positive or negative effect of these children? Could these things be prevented if it were not for the parents seeking fame, attention or money?

Mixed Messages?

I want to discuss one of the topics we are currently studying in class. What does it mean to be a "real man" and how exactly does the media affect our belief about this? The portrayals of men and masculinity are represented by the media in ways that I believe our possibly detrimental to our society. The ideas and story themes that are chosen can be very fictional, fantasy like and just plain ridiculous. Men are shown as aggressive, controlling and abusive to women and others that may not be as "tough" or "macho" as they are. What are we teaching young viewers about what is right or wrong? Are we proud that men are the ones arrested for violent crimes, domestic violence and assault charges? If you are a parent is this the image that you want your child to follow or idolize? This article explains that young boys are reinforced by the media that power and aggression are what it means to be a "real man". They believe that the behavior on shows and movies produced by the media represent normal behavior. What do you think the parents would say if a violent crime was committed against their son or daughter? How would a brother, sister or friend feel if someone close to them was assaulted or killed by a so called "real man"? Is this an image that you would want your children to be like?

"Equal Pay Day"

I am really interested in learning about the wage gap between women and men. In this article they discuss the difference between women and men's pay along with some explanation as to why it continues. The article states that "When women behave in the workplace as men do, the wage gap between them is small." What exactly does this mean? They go on to explain that women who do not have children are more focused on their career and therefore will have more time to focus on their work and career. The women in this category have a wage salary of 98% to a mans 100%. This shows a decrease in the wage gap, considering it has been decades since the number has decreased. The article also discusses an important factor that plays a part in the wage gap. Lifestyle choices play a major part in this issue, many women are only able to work part-time which cuts the hours to less than half of what a man would work. I understand that women are usually the main caretakers of the family, but I still am not sure that I agree with the difference in the pay gap. I believe that women who do work as much as, as hard as and as well as men deserve equal pay. In the future I believe that the gap will continue to decrease, but will our society ever consider that women are equal to men? I would be interested in hearing what others may think of this issue and what they may have experienced in the work field.

The atricle relates to the Media because they had an "Equal Pay Day" - the day on which many organizations protest wage discrimination between men and women. This was cosidered a special day for Feminist groups.

This video is Mariah Carey singing about Eminem and how he is obsessed with her. The title of the video is "Obsessed".

She has a character in the video who watches her through each scene and resembles Eminem. I think that both of these artists are very talented, but what are we showing the viewers about what we think of other people? The video shows how beautiful Mariah is and Eminem portrays a dark thug like character who is watching her, he has photos of her in his room all over the walls. Mariah states in the song how Eminem is "delusional".In the life of the famous you always hear rumors, gossip and things that are not true. The viewers will never know what is true or what is false. I think that this can cause people to have strong opinions about either vocalist without even knowing the truth. This sets forth hate and rebellion. Eminem has fought back with this video about Mariah called "The Warning".

Eminem sings about Mariah and her new husband Nick. He uses lyrics with bad language and how she was "dissed" by him. He says that this is her warning before "he puts the call out".

These artists are fighting back with words and lyrics about each other. This shows viewers that it is okay to talk about other people in a dis-respectful way. I disagree with the way they are using their talents and I think that it is ashame that it is broadcasted for everyone to see and hear. The language of Eminems video is hostile and inappropriate. Don't we get enough criticism from others? This is representing an idea that it is okay to criticize and degrade others. These videos have showed me that maybe these artists do not have any other material to write a song, therefore they have to write and sing about each other.What do you think about the lyrics and representations the videos have of each other? Looks can be deceiving!

What are we showing viewers about a woman's image? I just want to see what others think when it comes to the examples we have of women's bodies. Kelly Clarkson is a beautiful and talented woman. Kelly is comfortable with her body and image. The article below will show an interview with Kelly Clarkson, which is a testimonial that she is okay with her body and image. Why do we need to edit photos and images of women who are happy with themselves? I believe that this is because natural beauty may not be considered "flawless beauty" anymore. There are so many tools and products that the media uses and sells to "perfect" the images they represent. Why do magazines have to enhance, touch-up or even completely distort the real images they show in their magazines? Is this just to sell the magazine's or product's? I believe that this is one of the reasons that young women have such a difficult time accepting who they are and what they look like.Women are represented all over the media and shown as slim, beautiful and flawless. I think that viewers may get the wrong idea and assume that natural is not beautiful. The picture we are sending viewers is a false advertisement because these images are not real and can cause alot of unrealistic ideas to all.
